Celebrating Life at Death
What is a funeral celebrant?
A funeral celebrant creates and leads a personalized ceremony that reflects the life, personality, relationships, and values of the person being remembered. I work closely with families to create a meaningful tribute that feels authentic and gives loved ones space to gather, reflect, and remember.
What does a funeral celebrant do?
I guide families through the ceremony-planning process, from our first conversation through the day of the service. I listen to your stories and memories, help shape the ceremony, write the eulogy and other elements, coordinate readings, music, rituals, and special touches, and lead the ceremony so your family can focus on being present with one another.
How is a funeral celebrant different from a religious officiant?
A celebrant-led ceremony is built around the person being remembered rather than a prescribed religious structure. The ceremony can be completely secular, spiritual, or incorporate religious, cultural, or family traditions that are meaningful to you. If you would like to include clergy, I’m also happy to collaborate with a priest, rabbi, pastor, or other religious leader.
Do we have to be religious to work with a funeral celebrant?
Not at all. I work with families from a wide range of backgrounds and beliefs. Whether you want a secular ceremony, a spiritual service, or one that incorporates specific religious traditions, we can create something that reflects your family and your loved one.
Can we personalize the ceremony?
Absolutely. Personalization is at the heart of what I do. A meaningful ceremony should feel like the person it honors. Stories, photographs, music, readings, humor, traditions, rituals, meaningful objects, and other personal details can all become part of the experience.
Can family and friends participate?
Yes. There are many ways for loved ones to take part, including sharing memories, giving readings, playing music, displaying photographs or meaningful objects, participating in rituals, or simply being present. I can help you determine what feels natural and appropriate for your family.
Can you help us write the eulogy?
Yes. You don’t need to have the right words—or even know where to begin. During our conversations, I’ll listen to your stories, memories, and reflections and use them to create a thoughtful and personal tribute. My goal is to tell the right story—not simply a list of accomplishments, but a genuine reflection of who your loved one was.
What types of ceremonies do you offer?
I create and lead a variety of remembrance experiences, including traditional funerals, celebrations of life, intimate memorial gatherings, graveside services, ash scatterings, anniversary gatherings, tree plantings, and other meaningful ways of honoring a life.
Do you work with funeral homes?
Yes. I am an independent funeral celebrant and operate as my own entity rather than being affiliated with one specific funeral home. This allows me to work in tandem with any funeral home or funeral service provider. I coordinate directly with the professionals involved so the ceremony and planning process feel seamless for your family.
Where do you offer your services?
I’m based in Westchester County, New York, and serve families throughout the surrounding area. With ample coordination, I can also work with families anywhere in the United States. Family meetings can take place virtually, in person, or through a combination of both, and I’m available to travel and be onsite for the ceremony.
Do we need to meet with you in person?
Not necessarily. While I value meeting with families in person when possible, virtual meetings can work just as well. We can also take a hybrid approach depending on your needs and circumstances. What matters most is having the time and space to hear your stories and understand what matters to your family.
When should we contact a funeral celebrant?
You can reach out as soon as you begin making arrangements. Connecting early gives us more time to thoughtfully plan the ceremony, but I understand that arrangements sometimes come together quickly. I’m comfortable working with both short and longer timelines.
How much does a funeral celebrant cost?
Every family and ceremony is different, so fees are based on the scope of the service and level of planning involved. I’m happy to discuss your needs, explain what is included, and provide a clear fee before we move forward.
What is included in your celebrant service?
Depending on your needs, my services can include an initial consultation, family meetings, gathering stories and memories, writing the ceremony and eulogy, coordinating readings and music, communicating with the funeral home and other providers, planning special touches or rituals, and leading the ceremony itself. I tailor my involvement to what your family needs.
What if we don’t know what kind of ceremony we want?
That’s completely okay. You don’t need to have everything figured out before we begin. We’ll start with a conversation about the person you’re remembering—their life, relationships, personality, and what mattered to them. From there, I’ll help you determine what type of ceremony feels right and shape an experience that is meaningful to your family.
What is the difference between a funeral and a memorial service?
The main difference is whether the body is present. A funeral generally takes place with the body present and may happen shortly after someone’s death. A memorial service typically takes place without the body present and can be held days, weeks, months, or even later after a death.
There is no single right way to gather and remember someone. The choice may depend on your family’s wishes, cultural or religious traditions, timing, location, and what feels most appropriate for your loved one. I can help you think through the options and create a ceremony that feels right for your family.
How do we get started?
Simply reach out to me. We’ll schedule an initial conversation to talk about your loved one, your family’s needs, and what you’re envisioning. From there, I’ll guide you through the next steps and help bring the ceremony together.
